Non-league Ilfracombe City have banned ‘micro’ shin pads after ahead Riley Martin suffered an “insufferable” double-leg break in a South West Peninsula League match on the weekend.

Whereas there are presently no plans to ban the usage of the pads, the Soccer Affiliation says the usage of ‘mini’ shin pads has the potential to “improve the danger of damage”.

Ilfracombe City’s fixture at Bridport on Saturday was deserted after Martin broke his fibula and tibia throughout a 50-50 problem with the house goalkeeper.

“The preliminary sound of it was insufferable. It was like a shotgun going off,” Ilfracombe City chairman Nick Jupp informed BBC Radio 5 Reside.

“There isn’t any blame on Riley in any respect for carrying micro shin pads however I believe if he had extra protection on the shin space with larger shin pads, the damage may have been lower than it was.”

Whereas shin guards are obligatory beneath the legal guidelines of the sport, the foundations round them are imprecise.

They presently state that pads have to be lined solely by socks, made of an acceptable materials (rubber, plastic or related) and supply an inexpensive diploma of safety.

Additional FA guidance, external says: “The quantity of shin bodily lined is a crucial consideration, as any a part of the shin that isn’t lined just isn’t as properly protected.

“‘Micro’ or ‘mini’ shin pads could due to this fact improve the danger of damage because of the smaller quantity of shin lined in comparison with bigger sized shin pads.

“We advise that when contemplating the safety provided by shin pads, security is prioritised by making certain a very good proportion of the shin space is roofed and due to this fact protected.”

The Worldwide Soccer Affiliation Board (Ifab), soccer’s lawmaker, has been contacted for remark.

Ifab has beforehand stated it has no plans to change the rules and stressed that players – or the dad and mom or guardians of youth gamers – should take accountability for their very own security on the pitch.

“Gamers’ legs are all totally different sizes and there are such a lot of totally different supplies,” a spokesperson stated.

“Ifab’s view is that that is the accountability of the person participant and never the referee. The place younger gamers are involved, that accountability [should be taken by the coach, parents or guardians].”
