Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank says it was an “absolute mistake” for the video assistant referee (VAR) to intervene and award Newcastle a penalty as his facet earned some extent in dramatic trend at St James’ Park.

Cristian Romero’s injury-time overhead kick secured Spurs a 2-2 draw after the Magpies have been awarded a controversial 86th-minute spot-kick with the rating at 1-1.

Referee Thomas Bramall was despatched to the pitchside monitor after VAR noticed Rodrigo Bentancur holding Newcastle defender Dan Burn within the penalty field because the hosts took a nook.

It seemed like a tussle between the 2 gamers within the field as they each fell to the bottom and, regardless of the official not giving the penalty initially, the Spurs midfielder was punished after the evaluation.

Anthony Gordon transformed from the spot earlier than Romero’s Ninety fifth-minute leveller rescued some extent for Frank’s males.

Premier League match supervisor stated on X the penalty had been awarded as a result of Bentancur “clearly doesn’t have a look at the ball” whereas committing a “holding offence”.

Spurs have been sad with the choice, whereas pundits have been additionally fast to criticise, suggesting it was the type of incident that occurs at corners in most matches.

“It was an absolute mistake from the VAR,” stated Spurs boss Frank.

“The referee did good to do the ref name and so they encourage the refereeing name on the pitch. For me, that’s by no means a penalty.

“Even talking to some from Newcastle [they] do not assume it is a penalty and we’d like consistency.

“I believe the referee’s name on the pitch, he nailed it, and VAR can solely be if it is clear and apparent.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe added: “I hadn’t seen it, I am solely seeing it now. The massive factor is the defender is not trying on the ball in any respect, he is taking a look at Dan [Burn]. I believe it is most likely the fitting name.”
