Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has apologised after smashing his driver in anger through the ultimate spherical at Augusta on Sunday.
Paired with fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm, Garcia slammed his membership into the turf twice after hitting a shot that ended up in a bunker on the par-five second gap.
The 2017 champion then hit a close-by cooler, which snapped the head off his membership.
“I need to apologise for my actions on Sunday on the Masters event,” Garcia said in a statement posted on X., external
“I respect and worth every part that the Masters and Augusta Nationwide Golf Membership is to golf.
“I remorse the way in which I acted and it has no place in our sport. It does not replicate the respect and appreciation I have for the Masters, the patrons, event officers and golf followers around the globe.”
As a result of the membership was broken out of anger, Garcia was unable to switch it, leaving him and not using a driver for the remainder of the spherical.
Geoff Yang, chairman of the Masters competitions committee, issued a code-of-conduct warning to Garcia on the fourth tee.
The Spaniard went on to put up a three-over-par 75 to complete the week at eight over, third from final among the many 54 gamers who made the lower.
When requested after his spherical what the difficulty was, the 46-year-old stated: “Unhealthy golf.”
The event was gained by Northern Eire’s Rory McIlroy, who grew to become solely the fourth man to win successive Masters titles.
