The information comes as we are able to reveal:
- The within story of why the writing was on the wall for Flanagan and why his departure was step one in a protracted overdue overhaul
- Different senior figures on the province are below vital menace as Munster look to cease the rot
- A proposal of help from the IRFU was rebuffed, leaving HQ’s nostril out of joint, amidst the beginnings of a dangerous rift with Lansdowne Street
- Rising requires the return of one other Munster legend Declan Kidney, who might information Wooden if the ex-hooker have been to be given CEO position long run.
Whether or not Wooden’s appointment might result in a full-time appointment is unclear however an individual of Wooden’s standing would carry vital clout when it comes to profitable again supporters and profitable over sponsors for the troubled province.
The 54-year-old would even be a major asset in enhancing relations with the IRFU.
IRFU FALLOUT
Whether or not Wooden’s appointment might result in a full-time appointment is unclear however an individual of Wooden’s standing would carry vital clout when it comes to profitable again supporters
Mail Sport additionally understands that an method by the IRFU providing help within the fallout from current points was rebuffed by the province at committee stage on the idea of Munster not wanting exterior interference as they tackled their very own issues.
Based on sources, this angle was not effectively acquired at IRFU headquarters and stress is growing from the highest down for a radical overhaul of Munster procedures.
Flanagan stepped as CEO down after poor kind on the sphere over an prolonged interval was compounded by a collection of off-pitch points, headlined by the choice to signal Roger Randle final spring.
The damaging fallout from the Randle affair noticed the province fee an impartial evaluation and, whereas Munster sources declare the findings of the evaluation are more likely to be saved largely in-house, additional change is anticipated on the again of Flanagan’s departure.
The individual below probably the most scrutiny throughout the operation is common supervisor Ian Costello, who was implicated within the resolution to pursue Randle together with Flanagan culminated in former Munster gamers Mick O’Driscoll, Billy Holland and Kilian Keane resigning from the Skilled Video games Board adopted by additional resignations from the Industrial Video games Board.

Sources point out that the previous UL-Bohemians out-half Costello enjoys appreciable help inside UL from the Limerick golf equipment and from the ladies’s rugby aspect of the operation however is the goal of a lot criticism elsewhere within the organisation, particularly exterior Limerick.
CLEAN BREAK
In addition to changing the CEO, there have additionally rising requires a brand new common supervisor in Munster on the idea of a clear break from a tough interval with names like two-time European Cup profitable former head coach Declan Kidney and just lately retired former Munster and Eire captain Peter O’Mahony closely backed.
There may be an amazing consensus that Munster want to usher in individuals with a excessive profile and Munster pedigree to extend protection, galvanise supporters and assist to easy issues over with the IRFU.
The opposite crucial is to attempt to tackle the Limerick-Cork fissure operating by way of the province and sources imagine one of the simplest ways to handle that is to have one determine related to Limerick rugby as CEO (Wooden) and one other linked to Cork rugby as common supervisor (Kidney/O’Mahony).
GAMETIME
Amid all this upheaval, Munster are trying to bounce again from their opening house defeat by Glasgow after they tackle the Bulls at Thomond Park this night.
Head coach Clayton McMillan has made a whopping 11 modifications to the beginning XV for this showdown with final season’s overwhelmed finalists, with Craig Casey captaining the aspect from full again.
He may have a significant position in guiding younger out-half Charlie O’Shea exterior him as the previous Eire U20 star makes his first aggressive begin.
Within the forwards, there can be an opportunity for supporters to get a have a look at new hooker Marnus van der Merwe since he arrived from the Scarlets whereas Tom Ahern begins within the second row – needing to make an enormous impression out the gate with simply 12 months to the World Cup.

However it will likely be the week’s seismic information that can be on the minds and lips of most Munster supporters. The announcement that Flanagan could be stepping down as Munster CEO was worthy of the media tag of ‘bombshell’ yesterday however, in reality, it was no nice shock. One thing needed to give.
There can be an apparent connection drawn between Munster nice Peter O’Mahony pointedly calling for change on the prime this week (following on from Munster wing Johne Murphy making related statements final week) however this was brewing for a while.
There may be additionally the very actual chance that this transfer could also be pre-empting the findings of the long-awaited exterior report commissioned within the wake of the Roger Randle controversy.
And, whereas the blame for all of Munster’s ills, issues and disappointments can’t be laid on the door of 1 individual, as CEO, Flanagan was liable for what occurred on his watch and dissatisfaction about how issues have been being run was in all places.
NO WAY OUT
Flanagan had a tough act to comply with within the late Garret Fitzgerald, a person steeped within the rugby tradition of the province having performed with UCC and Cork Con earlier than teaching Munster to their well-known win over the world champion Wallabies in 1992.
Fitzgerald’s pure charisma and straight-talking model of management made him massively standard with gamers, coaches, media and supporters and there was a certainty to his course that calmed all these round him.
Flanagan had a tough act to comply with within the late Garret Fitzgerald, a person steeped within the rugby tradition of the province
That isn’t so say Fitzgerald’s tenure was not with out its issues — the single-minded concentrate on lastly getting over the road on their European odyssey led to wonderful triumphs in 2006 and 2008 however the ball was dropped when it got here to future-proofing and constructing on simply how large the Munster model was within the late 2000s.
Nonetheless, Fitzgerald had a presence as CEO that Flanagan was by no means capable of emulate.
Flanagan’s roots have been within the province, however the Corkman’s background was extra soccer than rugby and he was introduced in to assist increase the business aspect having labored as business director at Leicester Metropolis FC and as World Head of Soccer at Treble Group.
Nonetheless, whereas there have been successes on his watch — notably the centre of excellence at Musgrave Park — there was not the monetary upturn that had been hoped for.
The province failed to draw the massive sponsorship Flanagan — not with the ability to land an enormous naming rights sponsor for Thomond Park a significant black mark — and Munster have been present below a monetary cloud, with the CEO announcing redundancies via zoom from South Africa this year. Not look.
There was speak of bungled conferences the place potential sponsors (a well known ex-Munster ahead in a single case) have been postpone by the province’s hierarchy not having their homework accomplished.
The failure to correctly tackle the continued Cork-Limerick pressure was one other subject whereas there was ongoing discontent exterior Limerick about different counties not getting sufficient consideration.
A current characteristic by Rory Keane on Waterford rugby for Mailsport, which highlighted the fact that the Munster senior squad had not trained in the county for 15 years, drew an indignant response from the province, however their solely counter-argument was that Munster had performed a pre-season pleasant in Waterford – 11 seasons in the past.
There was an accumulation of issues on Flanagan’s watch that constructed up a simmering discontent which exploded with the Randle furore a number of months in the past.
When senior Munster figures with the gravitas of Mick O’Driscoll, Billy Holland and Killian Keane resolve sufficient is sufficient and step away from the Skilled Video games Board, adopted not lengthy after by members of the Industrial board, you realize the regime is in hassle.
Lump on criticism from main figures equivalent to O’Mahony, Murphy and Conor Murray and there was no method out.

To cap all of it off, it was additionally extensively identified that Flanagan utilized for the position of FAI CEO that ultimately went to David Courell — a profession aspiration that didn’t go down effectively round Munster.
The sporting and media panorama right here will not be as cutthroat because the UK and it was by no means a private subject. Generally it’s only a unhealthy match and possibly a transfer again to soccer could be the most suitable choice for Flanagan now.
THE WAY FORWARD
So, what subsequent? Nicely, Keith Wooden as CEO is a good begin. We first reported right here final June that discussions had been happening within the province about bringing in Keith Wooden as CEO.
The previous St Munchin’s, Garryowen, Munster, Eire and Lions hooker is ideal for the position.
The truth is that the province has fallen decrease than at every other level this century, immersed in scandal and mismanagement and final weekend we have been informed to see the positives in a gap URC defeat at house to Glasgow in entrance of a half-empty Thomond Park.
Munster want a rallying determine to encourage a turnaround and it’s exhausting to consider anybody in rugby extra inspirational than Wooden.
He’s a determine of worldwide respect and renown in rugby with a pure charisma and intelligence to make it rely, together with loads of expertise within the enterprise world.
Having Keith Wooden on the prime of the Munster tree would instantly soothe frayed nerves and could be an enormous draw when it comes to attracting sponsorship. Not least as a result of, whereas Flanagan largely hid away, bar an annual soft-soap interview for native media, Wooden shines on stage and would entrance as much as give Munster a far increased profile.
And, if Wooden is Munster’s Luke Skywalker, who higher than Declan Kidney as their Obi Wan?
And, if Wooden is Munster’s Luke Skywalker, who higher than Declan Kidney as their Obi Wan?
Kidney is the person who dragged Munster into the professional period and knitted all of it collectively. With the province riddled with internal battle and confusion, there isn’t any higher individual to heal rifts and construct cohesion than Kidney.
He and Wooden go method again — it was Kidney who introduced Wooden again from Harlequins in 1999 to get the ball rolling on Munster’s ‘holy grail’ and they’d dovetail once more completely now for the mission to show the province round.
By way of what title Kidney would have, that may very well be labored out in time nevertheless it must be a free-ranging position, an overseer inside and throughout the province, providing recommendation and course from prime to backside.
It’s usually recommended that Munster wrestle below the burden of their illustrious historical past however there’s nothing improper with tapping into that previous to recollect what labored for them earlier than.
Munster Rugby is in a gap, Wooden and Kidney are the boys to haul them out of it.
