England’s first-Check victory over Pakistan at Headingley final week was a welcome win after solely two within the earlier ten video games.
Returning captain Joe Root‘s aspect now head to Lord’s for the second Check, beginning Thursday, with the possibility to safe a primary sequence win for the reason that finish of 2024.
However after one other drink-related fiasco and with a continuing seek for the correct batting lineup, they nonetheless have inquiries to reply going into Lord’s.
Right here, Every day Mail Sport appears to be like at 5 of probably the most pressing.
Simply when Joe Root was beginning to inject positivity – and victories – again into the England Check group, extra complications have arisen
Can they put the Carse incident behind them?
Latest precedent isn’t encouraging. After Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson visited the Rex Rooms in Chelsea following the first-Check win over New Zealand at Lord’s in June, England disintegrated, for the primary time ever shedding a three-match residence sequence from 1-0 up.
Now, two days earlier than returning to the House of Cricket, Joe Root spent virtually everything of his 24-minute press convention addressing Brydon Carse’s arrest in Derby on Saturday night time. He spoke for the entire of the ECB when he stated he was ‘hacked off’.
Two components are in England’s favour as they search to keep away from one other meltdown. First, the most recent shenanigans won’t deprive them of any first-choice gamers. Towards New Zealand at The Oval, in contrast, Stokes and Atkinson have been stood down they usually fielded a aspect together with 5 gamers with a mixed whole of two caps.
Second, Pakistan are weaker than New Zealand, having misplaced 9 of their final ten Checks away from residence. Sections of their media have taken offence on the suggestion that that is the weakest Pakistan group to go to right here for 50 years, however nobody has but provide you with another reply.
Brydon Carse and Ben Stokes’ night time out in Derby has brought about but extra issues for the ECB – now Root’s group should reply higher than England need to earlier incidents
Has Emilio Homosexual nailed down his spot but?
Homosexual made a formidable begin as Zak Crawley’s substitute as opener, making 57 – the very best innings of the match – as England received a low-scoring first Check towards New Zealand at Lord’s, then including 53 within the first innings at The Oval.
Three failures have been adopted by a handsome 33 off 31 balls towards Pakistan at Headingley, however his dismissal there – squared up by Mohammad Ali earlier than edging to second slip – hinted at a technical weak spot outdoors off stump.
Six of his seven dismissals have ended with catches within the cordon. And whereas one in every of them was a leg-side strangle, a sample is in peril of rising.
Homosexual deserves the possibility to construct on these two fifties, however his Durham team-mate Ben McKinney lies in wait.

Can Jordan Cox make life troublesome for the selectors?
Initially chosen as a stand-in No3 whereas Jacob Bethell recovers from a knee damage, Cox started with 73 final week towards Pakistan, batting with the swagger that earned him an Indian Premier League contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He later chastised himself for spurning a maiden Check hundred – music to England’s ears.
It appears inconceivable that England received’t return to Bethell for his or her subsequent Check sequence, beginning in South Africa in December, however Cox may but stake a declare at No6, at the moment occupied by Dan Lawrence, and even for the wicketkeeper’s gloves.
It was behind the stumps that he would have made his Check debut in New Zealand in late 2024, solely to interrupt a thumb shortly earlier than the sequence started. The choice stays on England’s desk.
Jordan Cox made a formidable 73 in England’s lone innings at Headingley however admitted he let a maiden Check hundred slip via his fingers
Does that imply Jamie Smith is below strain?
Smith is amongst a gaggle of gamers whose repute is but to get better from the disastrous Ashes final winter.
The 26-year-old has had his moments this summer season, making an important 39 within the Lord’s shootout towards New Zealand, and top-scoring with 60 within the second innings at Trent Bridge – although by then the sport and the sequence have been gone.
However he missed an opportunity to impose himself on the Pakistan bowling at Headingley, tamely miscuing a pull to mid-on, and has now made 364 runs at 20 since scoring 51 towards India at Lord’s final summer season.
Smith just lately informed Every day Mail Sport he has discovered it painful watching his batting common stoop: it has simply fallen under 40 for the primary time since his second Check. His glovework stays fantastic, however he must show he has ironed out his technical flaws, particularly towards the quick ball and the nipbacker.

Are they any nearer to fixing their spin-bowling drawback?
Not likely. Shoaib Bashir is within the squad, however – with apologies to Lawrence – the dearth of a real all-rounder means England can’t squeeze him in. And his possibilities of taking part in within the third Check at Edgbaston have been broken by a season-ending groin damage to Sam Curran, whose presence and batting means would have balanced the aspect.
England nonetheless appear lukewarm in regards to the leg-spin of Rehan Ahmed, despite the fact that the 22-year-old who bats on the high of Leicestershire’s lineup would strengthen the decrease order, however they may also argue there isn’t a nice urgency to resolve the problem.
Spin bowling is unlikely to play a central position in South Africa on the flip of the 12 months, nor in subsequent summer season’s Ashes. It is going to be a problem within the two-Check sequence in Bangladesh in between, however these video games are low on England’s listing of priorities.
