The day after being confirmed as Take a look at cricket’s new No 1 batsman, Harry Brook celebrated his ascent with a blistering 91 off 93 balls as England continued to dominate Pakistan in Leeds.
If there was disappointment at his demise, bowled by left-arm spinner Ali Usman as he closed in on what would have been his first Take a look at hundred on his house floor, it was an innings that confirmed his panache, and took England midway in direction of a welcome victory.
At stumps on the second night, after a clatter of late wickets for Usman, they had been 366 for eight, a lead of 195. Barring one thing unlikely, the second Joe Root period is heading for an early fillip.
Regardless of a average sequence towards New Zealand, Brook had discovered himself again on prime of the ICC rankings after Travis Head failed twice throughout Australia’s shock defeat by Bangladesh in Darwin.
Had Pakistan captain Salman Agha held on low to his proper at second slip when Brook, on one, provided catching apply off Khurram Shahzad, he might need handed again his crown earlier than it had even been measured and fitted.
However England’s vice-captain counter-attacked with brio on one other rain-shortened day on which his group added 254 from 57 overs, and barely broke sweat.

Jordan Cox reacts to being dropped by the vacationers – who wasted heaven-sent bowling circumstances and fielded like a circus troupe
After the beginning was delayed till 2.45pm, there have been additionally half-centuries for Jordan Cox, his first at this stage, the inevitable Root and – on his return to the aspect – Dan Lawrence, because the vacationers wasted heaven-sent bowling circumstances and fielded like a circus troupe.
The place as soon as Headingley drew swathes of green-shirted Pakistan followers, they’re now conspicuous by their absence, a disappointment that displays their group’s fortunes. When Usman tried to subject the ball together with his boot on the third-man boundary and succeeded solely in kicking it over the froth, you puzzled what Wasim Akram or Waqar Younis should have made from all of it.
If there was any criticism of England, it was a scarcity of ruthlessness towards an assault through which solely Usman and Mohammad Abbas look as much as scratch. Shahzad and Muhammad Ali, in contrast, have to this point taken a mixed two for 200 from 38 primarily wasteful overs.
Cox performed some easy strokes in his first innings at No 3, together with 4 boundaries in an over off Shahzad, however on 73 poked at Usman and was caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan, ending a third-wicket stand of 150. As if unable to imagine what he had simply accomplished, Cox wasted a evaluate.
So did Root 4 balls later, after unexpectedly lacking a piece to leg off Shahzad. When DRS confirmed three reds, England’s prime 4 – together with Ben Duckett on Wednesday night – had burned all their critiques, and Root was trudging off. His dismissal happy solely the nerds: out for 66 in his 66th Take a look at as captain, with 66 on the again of his shirt.
If Brook had been held by Agha, 198 for 3 would have turn into 205 for 5, providing Pakistan a glimmer. As a substitute, he placed on 120 in 25 overs with Lawrence, who drove straight and swept exhausting.
He too, although, was left with a way of remorse. Having introduced up his first Take a look at fifty in 4 and a half years, he miscued a slog-sweep off Usman and was strolling off whilst Rizwan waited for the skyer.
The stage appeared set for Brook to place apart the trauma of his 99 right here a 12 months in the past towards India, and he raced via the eighties. However an tried whip to leg off Usman proved his undoing, the ball beating his outdoors edge and cannoning into center stump.
Of all of the treks again to the pavilion, Brook’s was the slowest, but such has been his maintain over Pakistan’s bowlers for the final 4 years that his efficiency right here solely marginally improved his report towards them. It now reads 932 from 11 innings at almost 85. Say what you want in regards to the friendliness of the assault, however that’s nonetheless some going.
Buoyed by the breakthrough, Usman pinned Gus Atkinson leg-before for 3, then bowled Ollie Robinson first ball, celebrating a maiden five-for in solely his third Take a look at by dropping to his knees in quiet prayer.
Pakistan will want their batsmen to indicate related resolve of their second innings if they’re to get out of this.

England’s seam-bowling all-rounder choices are restricted after Jamie Overton referred to as time on his Take a look at profession final 12 months to focus on limited-overs alternatives throughout worldwide and franchise scenes.
Every day Mail Sport understands there isn’t any likelihood of him reconsidering this determination, however England’s obvious ditching of an obsession with tempo below the brand new regime might be excellent news for his twin brother Craig when contemplating the third Take a look at squad.
The final of Overton’s eight appearances got here throughout the tour of the Caribbean in 2022, however he’s having the season of his life with Somerset, hitting three a whole lot with the bat and taking 33 wickets at fewer than 20 runs apiece within the County Championship.
In the meantime, it’s unsure whether or not Jacob Bethell will return earlier than the top of the season because of the meniscus challenge in his knee that has dominated him out of the Pakistan sequence.
