McLaren’s Lando Norris set the tempo in follow at the USA Grand Prix, break up from team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri by Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg.
Norris, trailing the Australian by 22 factors with six races to go, headed Piastri by 0.279 seconds at the beginning of a dash weekend on the Circuit of the Americas.
Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, forward of Purple Bull’s Max Verstappen and Williams’ Alex Albon.
This was the one session earlier than dash qualifying at 22:30 BST.
Mercedes’ George Russell was seventh quickest, the primary driver to set his quickest time on the medium tyres, forward of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Haas’ Oliver Bearman.
