Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been cleared of allegedly impeding Pierre Gasly in Canadian Grand Prix qualifying, which implies the Ferrari driver retains his fifth place on the beginning grid.
Hamilton made a visit to the FIA race stewards one hour after qualifying for allegedly blocking Alpine driver Gasly on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. On his first flying lap in Q1, Gasly encountered Hamilton – who was on an outlap – on the run right down to Flip 8. Hamilton appeared unaware of Gasly approaching as he weaved to heat up the tyres.
Explaining the incident to the stewards, Hamilton stated that each he and his Ferrari crew did not suppose Gasly was on a flying lap. And since the incident did not change Gasly’s Q1 consequence, with the Frenchman advancing to Q2, they did not really feel aggrieved by Hamilton’s actions.
“The driving force of Automotive 44 defined that he was underneath the impression that Automotive 10 was not on a push lap, and his crew confirmed that it had the identical opinion. The driving force and crew consultant of Automotive 10 said they didn’t contemplate this to be a case of “pointless impeding”. The Stewards subsequently decided to take no additional motion.”

Gasly had struggled all weekend with the behaviour of his automobile, taking his Alpine out of parc ferme after dash qualifying to make use of Saturday morning’s 23-lap dash as a glorified take a look at run.
