As Honda distances itself from Tsunoda, what are his F1 options?

If Yuki Tsunoda and his new administration have been hoping to obtain a serving to hand from Honda as Tsunoda builds a case to stay in Components 1, the temper music coming from HQ isn’t promising.

As a member of Honda’s driver programme, Tsunoda was fast-tracked by means of the European junior single-seater ladder, making his F1 debut in 2021 with the staff then often called AlphaTauri. On the time it was politically expedient for Crimson Bull to take a Honda-supported driver because it was attempting to maintain the producer engaged in F1 after an costly spend to succeed in competitiveness – and far dangerous PR throughout its abortive comeback with McLaren.

However now the panorama has shifted: Honda is realigning itself with Aston Martin, Crimson Bull is pivoting again in direction of constructing its personal engines, albeit with Ford sponsorship, and Tsunoda is getting into his fifth season in F1 having didn’t persuade Crimson Bull he’s price selling to associate Max Verstappen in its senior staff. And the message to him from Honda is: you’re by yourself.

“He [Tsunoda] must take motion himself,” Honda Racing Company president Koji Watanabe stated in an interview with Japanese Motorsport.com. “I need him to make the most effective decisions for himself.

“He’s now in his fifth 12 months, has the flexibility, and understands the world of F1 nicely.

“There’s not rather more we are able to do for him. He must solidify his help staff, together with his supervisor, and safe the mandatory seat. He’s an expert, in spite of everything.

“Drivers can’t depend on Honda without end. Somebody of Tsunoda’s profession degree must suppose for himself.”

If this doesn’t sound unequivocal sufficient, Watanabe had already made Honda’s level clear in an earlier press convention: “Tsunoda has a sponsorship settlement with us. He’s essentially an unbiased driver, however we help him as a sponsor.”

The top of Honda’s relationship with Crimson Bull has triggered an intensive pulling-up of the ladders, since Ayumu Iwasa – at the moment the Racing Bulls F1 reserve driver after bouncing between F2 and Tremendous Components in recent times – has additionally been advised he must handle his personal future.

“In idea, there might be alternatives with Aston Martin, however Iwasa is free to make his personal profession selections,” clarified Watanabe.

The implication right here is that Honda is presuming nothing because it approaches this new relationship, and it actually doesn’t wish to start its new association with Aston Martin whereas laden with baggage from the Crimson Bull years.

Takuma Sato, the Indy 500 winner who entered F1 in 2002 with Honda’s help and is now an HRC govt, stated as a lot not too long ago.

“Yuki has nothing to do with Honda anymore,” he stated. “I need him to go to Crimson Bull, Mercedes, or Ferrari as quickly as attainable. If he doesn’t transfer on, it blocks the trail for youthful drivers.

“He has made it this far, so there’s no want for Honda or HRC to step in and negotiate for him anymore.”

Not that there are any rapid vacancies at Aston Martin anyway, since Fernando Alonso is contracted till the tip of 2026, Lance Stroll will occupy the opposite seat for so long as his father owns the staff, and the reserve driver function is the area of 2022 F2 champion Felipe Drugovich. The one alternative which may open up – ‘in idea’ – is that if Drugovich parlays his IMSA relationship with Cadillac into an F1 drive when that producer joins F1 subsequent 12 months. However that’s additionally a vacation spot Tsunoda will take note of.

Apart from that, there are not any seats at F1’s high desk until Liam Lawson fails spectacularly at Crimson Bull. The midfield can be nicely catered for: Williams, Sauber/Audi and Haas haven’t any motive to alter their present line-ups and Alpine already has Franco Colapinto prepared to exchange Jack Doohan if the necessity arises.

Is a sixth season at Racing Bulls now Tsunoda’s most lifelike prospect other than Cadillac? Maybe – however, since Crimson Bull’s junior programme is stuttering into gear once more after being caught quick not too long ago, there’s no assure of him persevering with there both.

Crimson Bull ‘driver advisor’ Helmut Marko advised our Dutch Motorsport.com colleagues Tsunoda’s new team-mate Isack Hadjar had finished sufficient already to make the senior stakeholders “comfortable”. In the meantime, the extremely rated Arvid Lindblad will make his F2 debut this 12 months and will simply be within the hunt for a 2026 seat.

“He [Tsunoda] has a younger, quick team-mate subsequent to him and it is his personal future, you already know, so he has to encourage himself,” stated Marko.

“If he’s doing nicely, then there’s a future. If not, then possibly there is not any extra probability in F1 for him.”
