The season was not a month previous when the penny dropped {that a} title problem might be on.
Nottinghamshire, the county champions, had been bolstered by the provision of England duo Ben Duckett and Josh Tongue for the tip of April fixture. The perfect calibre of opponent towards which to gauge their very own credentials.
‘One thing that we have spoken about as a workforce rather a lot is one thing you speak about rather a lot in Check cricket too – about successful home windows of matches,’ says Chris Woakes.
‘There was a window on day one at Trent Bridge the place we might have simply misplaced it and unexpectedly we’d have been proper on the again foot within the sport. However we wrestled some momentum again and put ourselves in a stable place.’
Certainly, with Tongue tearing in from the Radcliffe Highway finish, Warwickshire had been reeling at 179 for six. However because of 165 from Ed Barnard together with half centuries from Woakes and Michael Sales space, they posted 459. On the third morning, Nottinghamshire adopted on.
The sport led to a draw, however it’s a match that Warwickshire’s squad cross reference when requested to mirror upon their journey to a ninth County Championship pennant. That specific window had given them a glimpse into what was doable; they knew they’d the gamers to go toe to toe with the very best.
Throughout eight appearances, Woakes has averaged 25 with the bat and 24 with the ball. Strong slightly than spectacular, however his mere presence has lifted others.
And it has been heartening to witness him return to the county scene. Twelve months in the past, a left shoulder badly dislocated in a Check match towards India at The Oval left him ‘anxious that I may not play once more’.
Warwickshire are winners of the County Championship for the ninth time
Veteran Chris Woakes returned to county cricket to fulfil his father’s dream
One of many motivations for extending his profession past his 217 worldwide caps was to honour his late father Roger, an enormous fan of the membership. He additionally needed ‘to do the badge proud,’ saying: ‘I’ve been a Warwickshire man for the reason that begin. I walked by way of the gates at 11. So it simply did not really feel proper to complete, actually, within the method that it did with England. Clearly that chapter has been closed, however I all the time felt like I would like to depart the sport the best way I got here in, which was clearly by way of the county grind.’
Strolling away from the first-class sport as a county champion represents a becoming farewell for one in all cricket’s most revered rivals. Woakes will probably be 38 subsequent season, however he has vowed to maintain an open thoughts, letting the mud choose this one first earlier than contemplating turning into a white-ball specialist.
Woakes acquired his workforce over the road in what’s going to go down because the pivotal match: the one-wicket nail biter with Sussex at Edgbaston in August, the primary of 5 wins in an unbeaten ‘block’ of six Championship fixtures to complete the season.
In an encounter by which 207 was the best innings rating, Warwickshire wanted 47 with three wickets standing, however Woakes stored his nerve with an unbeaten 23.
Nonetheless, it has been his common new-ball associate throughout this era, Ethan Bamber, who has given credence to a few cricket’s maxims: the Championship is a marathon not a dash; and bowlers win you silverware.
On the coronary heart of Warwickshire’s recruitment planning for 2026 was to increase their pool of seam bowlers. They secured their No 1 goal in Yorkshire all-rounder Jordan Thompson on a giant six-figure wage, lured the much-coveted England Lions participant Nathan Gilchrist from Kent and introduced again the skilled legs of Keith Barker, a Championship winner with the Bears in 2012, from Hampshire.
Ethan Bamber is the ‘workhorse’ whose bowling has set the tone for the workforce
Assets that provided them the chance to rotate the assault members, holding legs contemporary. None have featured throughout a busy September, although. Thompson has remained on the sidelines, Gilchrist despatched on mortgage to Leicestershire whereas it has been Barker’s first month of retirement after succumbing to a knee damage.
The Championship’s remaining stanza represents a punishing schedule of 24 days cricket out of 39, however the indefatigable Bamber has responded within the method of one other workhorse, George Orwell’s Boxer in Animal Farm, who met each demand for elevated labour with the pledge: I’ll work tougher.
‘I prefer to assume I am an excellent professional and I do the correct issues, but when I’ve acquired up at 8am and had a stretch, Bamber’s acquired up at 7am and run 20km. He’s the very best professional, you’ll ever come throughout in your life, I promise you,’ says team-mate Olly Hannon-Dalby.
‘He is completely very good. There’s not a stone he does not overturn to attempt to get the very best out of himself. And from a bodily, psychological, tactical, technical viewpoint, he is excellent. So there’s completely no shock the success he is had this 12 months.
‘I do know there’s plenty of chat about what succeeds at Check stage and how briskly you want to bowl, however for county cricket Ethan Bamber’s distinctive. He’ll hammer away for 20 overs a day, by no means loses any tempo and threatens the highest of off stump, each inside edge and outdoors edge.’
Sending down extra deliveries than anybody else within the prime flight has reaped its rewards for the 27-year-old Bamber. With 69, he completed because the main wicket-taker throughout each divisions, backed up by the facet’s excellent slip catching. Rob Yates, at second, bagged an unbelievable 37.
Bamber’s arrival at Edgbaston was triggered by a woeful 2024 season for the membership that noticed them win simply as soon as.
Recognising the necessity for a strike bowler, they recalled the large impression Bamber had left, taking 9 for 91 in Birmingham the earlier summer time. It was one of many final huge cricket selections made by the previous efficiency director Gavin Larsen.
Among the finest of a brand new regime that has are available in for criticism – together with the 31% rise in Ashes tickets costs subsequent summer time, a poor 2026 season in limited-overs cricket and failure to maintain academy product Hamza Shaikh, who opted to maneuver to Leicestershire – was a change of captaincy this March.
Barnard didn’t push for the place, however was recognized as the correct man to steer the workforce ahead by the membership’s choice makers: chief govt Stuart Cain, Larsen’s successor James Thomas and Ian Westwood, head the coach. Alex Davies’ resignation was introduced on the eve of the season.
Barnard is a quiet, unassuming presence, main by instance on the sphere.
Some individuals assume he has been too good at occasions. One idea was that Thompson was bowling the overs that may ordinarily be equipped by Barnard in periods of the season.
Taking over extra accountability in Thompson’s absence, he took extraordinary match figures of eight for 18 within the crushing innings dispatch of Glamorgan a fortnight in the past.
Davies – like Thompson one other glorious servant of the home sport, additionally misplaced his place in Warwickshire’s first-choice XI over latest weeks – but it surely needs to be acknowledged that as membership captain for 3 years he was concerned in foundational work for this success, together with the signing of Beau Webster as one of many membership’s abroad gamers.
Australian Webster proved much less efficient in his second season with the membership, however is a well-liked character inside the group. As is Manav Suthar, the India sluggish left-armer, Warwickshire secured in June, days earlier than a Check debut that bore seven Afghanistani wickets.
Spin bowler Manav Suthar is extremely regarded and considered as the following huge celebrity
‘We had been all panicking that he may not come over after that, that India would wrap him up in cotton wool, however fortunately he did,’ says Hannon-Dalby.
Suthar claimed 11 victims in two mid-season appearances for Warwickshire and returned to Edgbaston as soon as extra after taking his Check haul to 23 in three matches through the away sequence in Sri Lanka.
His new team-mates reckon they’ve a future world celebrity of their midst.
‘He rags it. You typically speak about bowlers on the subject of their accuracy, however he simply spins it a great distance. Even in warm-ups, in case you watch him, he’s spinning it sq.,’ says Hannon-Dalby.
‘He is a really cool cat too. Taking part in Check cricket for India at 23, within the IPL, carrying clobber within the altering room that I might solely dream of. Gold chain, by no means takes his sun shades off.
‘And he’s completely purchased into being right here. For instance, on the eve of this final match, he was within the nets chatting to all our younger academy spinners. Hopefully, there is a relationship with him for a few years to come back.’
Hannon-Dalby is one other of the Bears’ nice storylines this summer time. Deemed surplus to necessities in April, he was despatched on mortgage to Worcestershire. Serving discover at New Highway that he nonetheless had life in him at 37, he was recalled by his mother or father membership for first workforce obligation and handed a contract that may see him stay a member of ‘the unhealthy lads’ – the collective time period given to the membership’s seamers by their distinctive bowling coach Graeme Welch – for 3 extra years.
Like Suthar and Bamber, Hannon-Dalby’s Division One wickets have come at a price of fewer than 20 apiece.
Together with Sam Hain, the one one of many membership’s batsmen to achieve the 1,000 run mark in 2026 and contributor of two of their minimalist 5 a whole lot, Woakes and Yates, he was a part of the 2021 title-winning squad.
Dramatically sealed on the ultimate night of the marketing campaign, it was solely Warwickshire’s eighth County Championship pennant in a contest that has been in existence since 1890 – a determine that maybe undersells the scale of the membership.
‘Warwickshire is a kind of golf equipment the place there may be arguably a bit extra expectation to win issues,’ says Will Rhodes, their captain that season and taker of the catch that accomplished the last-round victory over Somerset.
‘For somebody like me who was by no means going to play worldwide cricket, enjoying on the prime finish and successful the County Championship is the top of a profession.
‘It takes quite a lot of luck, quite a lot of talent, however quite a lot of onerous graft.’
Phrases that the winners of Warwickshire’s ninth will little question respect after they look again at these all necessary home windows.
